The Captify Pro smart glasses promise real-time captions and translations directly in your field of view, offering a minimalist design and straightforward setup. While they excel in their core function, the glasses feel more like a specialized tool than a complete smart glasses ecosystem. With a price tag of $899, they compete in a market where more versatile options exist.
Design: Normal Glasses with a Subtle Tech Twist
The Captify Pro resembles regular spectacles with thin black plastic frames and rectangular lenses. The endpieces, though larger than typical, could be seen as an aesthetic quirk. The temples, mounted on spring hinges, house the electronics discreetly. The lenses, flat and clear, feature rectangular waveguides etched near the top. Prescription lens support is impressive, offering diverse options for single-vision, reading, progressive, and bifocal lenses.
Performance: Accurate Captions and Usable Translations
The Captify Pro delivers accurate captions, with a bar above the captions indicating other noises. However, captioned speech is transcribed into a plain block of text, which can be jumbled when multiple people speak simultaneously. Translation works well, but the English output may be confusing, and the Japanese translation flickers between multiple translations. Cloud-based processing enhances accuracy, while offline mode is less reliable.
Controls and Software: Simplicity and Clunkiness
The glasses offer a limited interface, with Transcribe and Settings as main tiles. Setting up and configuring is done through the Captify app, which provides various options for display settings and language choices. However, the translation options are tucked away, and switching between captioning and translation can be awkward. The app records transcriptions, but misheard words may be written incorrectly.
In my opinion, the Captify Pro is a useful tool for real-time captions and translations, but its limited features and price make it feel like a specialized solution rather than a comprehensive smart glasses ecosystem. The competition in the market offers more versatility, leaving the Captify Pro feeling like a niche product.
